In 2012, Judy Pepper and her husband Vaughn, a retired Westminster police officer, wanted to start a business that brought their community together. A coffee shop seemed like just the thing, so they began testing their skills and ideas with two kiosks in their town’s municipal buildings.
When they found the perfect location, they took the leap and opened their own shop. Named after their granddaughter Zoe, this community coffee house has won awards for best place to meet new people and best customer service. A local couple even met and eventually got engaged there!
Judy and her family love the way owning a small business allows them to make decisions for themselves —and they also love providing a place where their customers feel welcome.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Judy and her family adapted quickly. Rather than closing the shop, they moved their checkout to the entrance so customers could place and receive their orders outside.
With the local health department’s permission, one faithful customer in his 80s was given a seat in the café where he could safely drink his coffee and converse with staff.
To other small business owners, Judy’s advice is to pay careful attention to each customer. Greet them. Connect with them. Let them know you’re happy they’re there.
The café’s previous workers’ comp experience was disappointing, to say the least. Their prior provider sent their bill to the wrong address—Zoe’s Coffee never received it and found out that their coverage had been dropped unexpectedly.
Judy began looking for better solutions and wanted to support a Colorado-based business while also getting a great rate. Her search led her to Pie, and an online quote indicated that Pie could save Zoe’s nearly 25 percent. She’s never looked back. “I had a question recently and I called them. They get right back to you. They have outstanding customer service,” Judy shared.
