In the 90s, Kelly Perkins found herself frustrated with the lack of options for toxin-free skincare. Finding it nearly impossible to locate chemical-free products, Kelly took things into her own hands. In 2011, she began selling handcrafted soap at local markets. From there, she grew her offerings to a variety of skin care products and often sold out at markets.
In 2012, after selling Spinster Sisters Co. products all around Colorado, Kelly quit her corporate job to run the company full-time. In 2014, Spinster Sisters opened their first branded shop in Golden, CO. They launched in Whole Foods in 2019 and as they continued to grow in 2020, they also spent time making hand sanitizer for their community. After expanding to other grocery chains, they received their Benefit Corporation Certification in 2022 and renewed their commitment to being plastic-free by 2024.
What started as a passion project has grown into a thriving business. Kelly loves supporting kids, students, and new entrepreneurs to get off on the right foot as they begin their own ventures. She also still loves creating new products (though her production team isn’t always excited about it).
One of the biggest lessons Kelly has learned is that cash and liquidity are vital. If she wants to make a big, costly change and can afford it, she waits six months. If she can still afford it, then she moves forward.
In the midst of all their growth and goal to be plastic-free by 2024, Spinster Sisters Co. must still think about the less exciting, but necessary, parts of small business ownership—like insurance.
“Pie has made workers’ comp insurance very easy,” Kelly says. “They are very responsive and actually want to help you. By far the easiest and most responsive insurance company I have worked with. Give them a go!”
We are so excited to be a small part of supporting businesses like Spinster Sisters Co.!
Kelly’s favorite pie? Her mama’s French Silk pie.
